Today is Pongal – a celebration of the harvest and a thanksgiving festival for the sun. During this day, a ritual is performed where rice is boiled in milk with jaggery and left to boil over a pot as a sign of prosperity and abundance. To bring the sun back to Tromsø through Pongal, SASUSU Radio will hold a physical and live-streamed event on the 16th of january to raise money for local communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah in Ilankai/Sri Lanka.Link to donation (information below) - https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/9lLqalSrsgSri Lanka has been severely affected by flooding in the wake of Cyclone Ditwah, which hit the island's east coast on 28 November 2025. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake described it as the ‘most challenging natural disaster’ in the country's history, with reports of 630 dead, 210 missing and millions of people displaced from their homes. This disaster is a major setback for the country, which was declared bankrupt in 2022.Where does the money go?On Friday evening, we will be raising money on behalf of the Suriya Women's Development Centre in Batticaloa on the east coast of the island. The centre has compiled a verified list of organisations in need of financial assistance in connection with the disaster (a link to the list is included in the donation description). The list also specifies which items are urgently needed. They will distribute the money among the various organisations on the list.Read more about the Suriya Women’s Development Centre here:
